The Mike Thompson Chronicles

Grapes & Gripes

Here's why I want to bring Mike Thompson back to his vineyard in Napa County: I believe he is an honorable man, and he has served his country in war and in government.

Sadly, he is now part of the Democratic "leadership" which has led us, in spite of our cries for an end to violence and a return to a peaceful and caring government. Now it's time for him to move over. Mike Thompson is part of the problem!

He is a founder of the Congressional Wine Caucus, which welcomes merchants and lobbyists straight into the halls and backrooms of the U.S. Congress. He is a leader of the Blue Dog Coalition. This is a powerful group of wealthy "conservative to moderate" congressmen and women (that's their own description of their group!) who work hard and successfully to represent the interests of Big Business against the needs of ordinary citizens. In a wine-industry publicity photo of Mike and his wife in one of his elegant congressional offices, the caption reads: "Makeup by Nicole Colucci. Mike is wearing a Hickey-Freeman blazer, Ralph Lauren shirt and pants, and Ferragamo shoes from Neiman Marcus. Janet is wearing a Louis Feraud blazer, turtleneck and slacks from Neiman Marcus."

The House of Representatives was intended to be the branch of congress for regular people, not high-fashion models. Of the 435 members of the House of Representatives, where all spending bills start, 413 are millionaires, Mike among them. How on earth can regular people expect a fair shake from a government of, by and for the rich? Is it really any surprise things are going wrong? Is it surprising that you don't see much for the taxes you pay? It's as old as time: the rich get richer. The rest get whatever's left.
